Today is my first day at work in Australia, very excited! Working in Chinese restaurant is not an easy job, but I am just a working holiday maker, plus this is my first day only, so no stress at all. I went to “yum cha” for many times, but never work as waitress, so I know nothing about this job. There’s a colleague who is a nice guy, trying to teach me and help me a lot. Basically, my job today is just making tea and filling hot water, and as I expected, I burnt my hands for few times(don’t worry, just a bit pain), and I can’t hold too many dishes at once like my colleagues did. Luckily, today is Monday, it’s less busy than weekend, but still many people come to yum cha, and all colleagues are very nice, they try to teach me whenever they have time. I kept reminding myself to be alert at work, no daydreaming, try hard to remember things. I can feel the managers here are quite terrible when they get angry.
Working in this restaurant make me feel im back in HK, coz most customers speak Cantonese and Mandarin, and just some of them are gwai lo. Many of colleagues are from Mainland China, but most of them can speak Cantonese, HAHA, there’s a mainland colleague made a complement about my Mandarin, she said my Mandarin is so good than she didn’t think im from hk at first. Oh ya, there’s a girl from hk is also a backpackers like me, but I don’t have much chance to talk to her. Colleagues and Manager all ask me if im very tired from the first day at work, but I’m not that tired, maybe becoz it’s Monday and I only work from 10:30-15:30, compare to my working hours in HK it just like nothing. I hope I can pick up things quickly and can work like my colleagues, holding many dishes at once, work smart and fast. Then I can find a job of higher pay later, I heard it’s the best Chinese restaurant in Brisbane. By the way, I know many friends are worrying about Tyler and I, thanks everyone, I’m really OK. Actually I still get along very well with him, but we just think we suffer too much from long distance relationship, that’s why we decided to free each other, and we actually feel better now, so nothing unhappy. And what about when we see each other again in HK later, well that’s almost 1 year later, who knows what will happen? And now I am too busy to learn more about Australia, so just take that easy! | | |

Oh, I haven’t updated this blog for so long, coz I couldn’t access to internet at home these days, it really drove me crazy! Living all alone, no friends nearby, no jobs, and NO INTERNET, it really sucks!!! I can’t imagine what would happen if I haven’t bring my laptop with me, So yesterday, I couldn’t stand for this anymore and went to the library to use free wifi, and print more CV as well, but the connection is really slow there.
Well, let me write a Cantonese blog (a blog mixed with Chinese and English, Great! It’s a lot better to express myself) *that means, this is just an English version of the blog above, just for some people who can’t read Chinese.
What did I do these days? Just keep sending CV and walk-in asking for jobs. I went out almost every day, coz staying alone at home is too boring. It’s really hard to make new friends without a job.
BUT, I GOT A JOB TODAY! I’ll start working on coming Monday. Although it’s just a low-paid job in a Chinese restaurant, it’s better than doing nothing at home. Don’t worry, I’ll keep looking for better jobs. I know many backpackers are not willing to do such kind of low-paid job, but I’m just too boring to wait at home, I just love to work(even you don’t believe it) So when I have enough fund to move to other place, I’ll try some farm job to make my trip sounds more like a working holiday.
By the way, I worried too much about getting a job, and almost forget I came here for working holiday. I always forget to see the tourist spot whenever I went to the city. So, starting from now, I need to do more sightseeing during my leisure time.
Actually, I think Brisbane CBD (Central Business District) is quite similar to Causeway Bay and Central back in HK. Of course, the shops here will close a lot earlier, around 5 and 6pm. Though I still like here, coz there’s a lot of beautiful historical building, even it feels like Causeway Bay, but still, it’s more laid back and less stressful than HK. When you walk along Queens Street (shopping area in CBD), there are some people playing music, singing, pantomime. As Christmas is coming, there’s different groups singing x’mas carol from time to time. Let’s stop by now, otherwise it takes me too long time to finish the translation of this blog. I know you guys want to see new pics, but I can’t upload photos here by facebook, I still have many pics like those I went to the Zoo, anyways, I’ll try to upload again later.

I tried to find a job in city again today, walking around , asking for job. Well, I've already asked most of the food courts on Queens Street mall. So I'd better go to somewhere else. Beside looking for job, I met a HK guy named Calvin for lunch. I met him from a working holiday forum, and he's been in Oz for 2 months. Calvin is nice guy, he told me his life here and gave me many useful advice, and most important thing is, he is going to ask if there's vacacy for me in the factory he's working right now.
I realize "friends network" is really important when u are on working holiday, sometimes, "knowing people is better than knowing words"(識人真係緊要過識字) I really wish I can get that factory job, coz I'm quite sure the pay is higher than that in restaurant. Sunday, November 29, 2009
Today is my first time to travel in the asian area, Sunnybank, coz I went there meet my old frd Doris. Doris, who moved to Oz 10 years ago, is on holiday with her family in Brisbane this weekend. So I caught up with her in the afternoon in Sunnybank. I had a lunch at her home with her family, oh, i haven't had the hk style meal for ages. Her family is so nice that, her mom even try to find me a job in a chinese restaurant as she knew the manager there. So I had an interview and filled in a application form. I'm not sure if I will get this job, but I'm so appreciate Doris's mom to give me a helping hand when I really need a job. After that, I bought some groceries before home as Doris could drive me back home before she head back to Harvey Bay. How nice she is. Hopefully, I can get a job as soon as possible, so that I don't need to rely on Laurie so much. Laurie and Gail drove back home from Stanthorpe just before I got back. They were leaving Brisbane to Noosa tonight, and I'm really alone after today. It's quite lonely to stay here, coz there's hardly any backpackers here. Anyway, they will be back again on Dec11 for a frd's wedding party, so I hope by that time, I will have a job and have moved to other place.

Today is a job-hunging day! I was struggling so hard whether go out to find job, coz today is Saturday, but I'm already lazy for 2 days, so NO EXCUSE, DELAY NO MORE.
It's quite nervous and 淆底 to walk-in and ask for a job, expecially when you are in foreign country, but I have to be brave, and actually people don't know me, so what am I afraid of? So after wandering around a store(oh, there's a staff request to check my backpack coz i didn't buy anything ), I take a deep breathe, I walk to a food court and take my first step:"excuse me, do you have job vacancy here?" "oh, I'm sorry, no, we don't need more staff right now." and I give him a smile and say thankyou!
wow, I did it! I know it's not a big deal, but I'm a more confident to ask around now! I walked around food courts of different mall on Queen's Street (seriously, it's like Causeway Bay) and I distributed 8 CV and got one brief interview.
I think I got a good start today, and feel more confident to find job now. I'll do it again on Monday.
Tomorrow, I'll meet my friend Doris in Sunnybank (Asian area in Brisbane), she's my primary school and F.1 classmate, and she moved to Australia 10 years ago. She'll show me around Sunnybank and I may try to find a job there.

Happy Thanksgiving to my American Friend!
Starting from today, I'm all alone at home until Sunday, coz Larie and Gail have to go to Stanthrope to visit frds, so I'm free! oh, forget to tell you guys, the place I'm living now is Laurie's old house in Hawthorne, a suburb in Brisbane. I'm living in the room on the ground floor, the second floor is rented for a family. Laurie let me stay here before I got a job in Brisbane. I'm really really lucky to have Laurie's help, I'd better work hard to find a job!
OH, but I'll meet Mark in his apartment for thanksgiving, so I give myself an excuse to leave home lately without finding a job in CBD. This my first time to have thanksgiving, the dinner is so great, we have a big turkey, stuffing, corn dish (i don't remember the real name), nice wine from NewZealand. Mark's sister and her frd Andrew really did a good job!
It's a pity I didn't prepare to stay at their apartment, and I have to leave early, coz suburb in Brisbane is not like HK, it's so quiet and dark at night. When I walked back home, it's not even 9pm, you can hardly see anyone on the street, I started feel afraid and start to feel regret that I didn't go back home earlier.
Anyway, Im safe back home and I think I won't go back home alone lately anymore.

Good Day, Brisbane! I was too tired after visiting the zoo, so I just stayed at home all night. So, it's time to explore Brisbane city.
Laurie and Gail has own stuff to do, so I went to CBD (Central Business District) by myself. Before Laurie's gone, he took to buy a Go Card (similar to Octopus card in HK), as travel by concession card (student card) is a lot cheaper than adult card. The lady in news agent (place selling newspaper and magazine) didn't check my student ID, I kept asking Laurie if it's ok to get student Go Card, he said it's ok, people on ferry won't check.
So, the first time, I explore this country by myself, but the when I got on the ferry, somethings happened. The ferry staff ask for my student ID!!! Only Queensland student is eligible to buy a concession Go Card, so I pretended I didn't know about this, and the lady explained to me nicely and told me to get a adult ticket. OH! Im so unlucky, coz all locals I know here told me they seldomly check your student card. Perhaps I looked uncomfortable or inconfident on the ferry, plus the boat is empty, the lady just feel boring to check me. But the stupid thing is, when I arrived CBD, I was so hurry to get a adult card and cancelled the old one, what a idiot! why don't I tried one more time to see if they will check me? (obviously, nobody check me again the next few times when I got on the ferry.)
I wandered around Queens mall, got a free map from information centre, and fell very tired for no reason, so I rang Mark who just arrived Brisbane yesterday, and I decided to stayed in their apartment. Mark was an exchange in Lingnan, he comes from New York. He goes working holiday with his sister and his sister friend. They invited me to have thanksgiving dinner tomorrow. It's feel so good to see some friend back in HK.
I went home straight away after meeting Mark. Gail and her frd Liz picked me up at ferry pier, and we went to new restaurant in Bulimba(a suburb close to my home). The restaurant is....quite bad, noisy, bad service, bad food. (except oysters) so we went to have a drink in a pub nearby and chat for a bit.
So, Not much to do today, not to mention finding a job...except that stupid story on ferry, obviously, nobody ask me for student ID on my way home. Wednesday, November 25, 2009
Just before we arrived Brisbane, we went to Australia Zoo!!! yay!!! This is one of my happiest day since I came to Oz, Visiting the Zoo is actually my must-do thing in my trip! Thanks Laurie and Gail so much to bring me to the Zoo, and their daughter Michelle and bf Murray's company.
Australia Zoo is a zoo owned by late Steve Irwin and his wife Terri Irwin. This crocodile hunter's Zoo, like its name, you can see different kinds of salt water and fresh water crocodiles. Oh, i tell you what, there's a crocodile named Connie, she's the girlfriend of Acco (not Tyler, hahahahaaa~) Most crocodiles live in "pair", that means each couple got their own place.
And the thing that impressed me the most is, you can see the staff carrying animal to show around the visitors, like parrots, baby crocodile, baby lizard, snake, possum..etc. You can pat them and take pic with them! We bought a family ticket and booked a golf cart with tour guide helping us, so that we don't need to walk around huge Zoo, I'm sure we would very tired we didn't book it.
Our tour guide is Corey, he's been working in the Zoo for 5 years. He's like a dictionary of animals in the Zoo, no matter what u ask him about the Zoo or animal, he can give u a very detailed explaination and some funny story. He loves animal so much, always call them "baby, darling! boy~ girls~" and can played with them as well. With his help, we can travel around the Zoo in a organized and interesting way.
I really enjoy this tour! We have so much interaction with animals and learn a lot about Australian animal. We pat koala, feed kangaroos, watch fatastic tiger show...too much to mention. Just take a look of my photos of facebook
If I have chance, I really don't mind to visit this zoo again! http://www.australiazoo.com.au/ check this out to know more
Tuesday, November 24, 2009 It's been a week since I arrived Australia, and this is the last day to stay in Noosa. Laurie and Gail bring me to a asian restaurant to have dinner, and introduce me to their frd in Noosa Springs, Dick and Wendy. Dick and Wendy met me for once when I was four, but apparently, I can't recognize them.
The dinner is so nice, we order some Thai, Malay and Chinese dishes, and drink for bottle of wine! Dick and Wendy got a buzz at the end (or drunk? heheee~), but they are really friendly and funny!
So, Goodbye, Noosa! I'll see you again at the end of my trip.
